There is a very simple trick to this mission which can allow even solo mission runners like me to complete it.
When you warp in, make a bookmark then warp straight out.
Fit out your Raven with a 6 torp loadout, and T2 medium drones.
Wait until after downtime and warp back to the bookmark.
You will find nothing there.
Activate warp to nearest gate/base in the system.
As your ship starts to align, hey presto! The smugglers gate will appear, along with every other structure, ‘roid etc.
Stop your ship.
Now, the mission timer will only start from that point, so you have about five minutes to take down the smuggler gate and the rats which should also have appeared.
Start moving away from the gate until your about 80kms from it.
Whilst your moving, set your drones on the frigs and cruisers, blow away the battleships with your torps, you can then fire at the smugglers gate.
You should be able to blow away the gate before the next wave arrives, leaving you able to return to the agent, end the mission and come back and salvage the wrecks.
Ok, you lose the mission bonus payment, but you not only get to finish the mission, but salvage the wrecks, something you wont have time to do if you attempt to solo the mission and take out the waves as they arrive.

The 'trick' is not an exploit at all, every single mission which is not completed before downtime will act like this when you warp back to a bookmark. Dont you bookmark all mission area's so you can go back and salvage? Have you not had to leave a mission due to unforseen circumstances and had to restart it after downtime? Have you not warped back to the bookmark?
I've never bothered to exploit the game because, quite frankly, I cannot be bothered to.
